How do drug testing devices work and what are cutoff levels?
When a drug is consumed, the body excretes this drug as a metabolite. Instant drug testing devices are designed to detect the presence of said metabolite. The “cut-off level” is the minimum amount of the substance that must be present in order for the device to show a presumptive positive result. For example, a cut-off level of 300 ng/mL means that 300 nanograms of the metabolite formed by using a substance must be present within 1 milliliter of the sample.
